go to lowe’s.com, click on project center, then go to the virtual painter. You can “paint” sample rooms hundreds of colors til you find what you like, or what will go best with your accessories, furniture, carpeting, etc.
First, think about how much light you personally like. Me, I like to have an open feeling so I like to have the windows open and as much natural light as possible so I would want neutral type colors for the walls/floors and add color with furniture and accessories. If you are a person who prefers a darker room, go with dark walls and then lighter carpet. I had a friend who went with a deep burgarndy in her living room with a patterned carpet of color and she hated it within a month because she felt so enclosed. It was really pretty but she had no natural light coming into the room.
It would help if I knew what kind of furniture you have. Also, is it a bright airy room? If so I would go with lighter colors with complimentary borders or trim. If you want a darker room then go with warm colors like reds, burgundy or orange shades. You want a living room to be cozy and inviting.
In the bedroom you would want a soothing and calm color (or romantic) for the kitchen I’ve heard to avoid red because red makes you hungry. You really have to give more detail as to which room and what feeling you are going for.
work from the floor (rug or furniture that you know is going to be in the room) Otherwise the rainbow is your oyster. Remember that dark colors “shrink” a room, and light colors make it seem bigger.
